As a 15 year old boy, I was amazed by the gaming capabilities of the Playstation Portable, by how far handheld gaming had evolved since the original Game Boy and the Game Boy color, on which I played hours and hours of Super Mario Bros. I wanted to be a part of that, so with zero programming experience, I googled "how to develop homebrew games for the Playstation Portable". It turned out not to be easy at all, and I gave up after a few C++ lessons which sounded like Chinese to me.
A few months later I took a step back and followed a beginners programming tutorial in Python and then JavaScript. Using JavaScript and HTML5 canvas, I could finally develop simple but fun games, like the generation before had done with Flash. Thibauld and I developed numerous game prototypes during this time, each built on simple but unique and fun concepts. Reflecto was one of these concepts.
Many years and lots of experience later, we are back at it again, polishing our old prototypes and thinking of new ideas. Just recently we got our game Squirrel Jumps running on the Nintendo Switch, finally fulfilling my goal from when I was 15 years old.
As long as I can remember I have been a gamer. My Uncle and Grandpa also were gamers. The first game console we owned was the SNES. It was gifted to my brother by my Uncle and we still play super bomberman on it today. My Grandpa passed away too soon and my brother and I inherited a bunch of games for the computer. Before that I was only familiar with console games. However many of the pc games were point and click games. Like Gabriel Knight, Timelapse and Tex Murphy to name a few. I absolutly loved it. It had movie clips with real actors. I felt like I was in a movie making decisions that would have an impact on the story.
From that moment I always felt an itch to make games. It started with boardgames made with cardboard and glue of my favorite tv shows and now I am making mobile/console games that hopefully will capture the magic of gaming that I felt when I was young. If I hadn't met Jens it always would have stayed a dream, but now it is becoming reality and I will be forever grateful.
